The Wakasa Ghost Lantern

The Wakasa Monument Committee traveled to the National Council on Public History conference in Utah this weekend to help bring understanding to the Wakasa Monument’s story. The group led by Nancy Ukai, Akemi Yamane and Kiyoshi Ina, debuted Emiko Omori’s film The Gift along with the unveiling of the Wakasa Ghost Lantern. The Ghost Lantern is a rattan structure covered in washi paper made in the likeness of the Wakasa stone monument. Yoshinori Asai is the artist who made the lantern. I created a moving art projection which tells the story of James Wakasa that is projected onto the lantern’s surface.
